{"id":9918,"date":"2024-06-26T11:17:20","date_gmt":"2024-06-26T08:17:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/?p=9918"},"modified":"2024-06-26T11:52:19","modified_gmt":"2024-06-26T08:52:19","slug":"how-the-private-sector-can-address-climate-changes-impact-on-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/how-the-private-sector-can-address-climate-changes-impact-on-health","title":{"rendered":"How the private sector can address climate change&#8217;s impact on health"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wef-1pf65v3\">\n<ul class=\"wef-1h9w1zb\" role=\"list\">\n<li class=\"wef-1ty47b3\">The complex, interconnected impact of climate change on health is driven by systemic factors across infrastructure, agriculture, livelihoods and healthcare.<\/li>\n<li class=\"wef-1ty47b3\">The health impacts of climate change also threaten businesses and workforces, and so the private sector must use its resources and expertise to help mitigate this.<\/li>\n<li class=\"wef-1ty47b3\">To make this happen, industries must collaborate with the public and non-profit sectors to develop, apply and encourage adoption of new technologies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p><a title=\"Climate change creates health risks for 70% of global workers\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-creates-health-risks-for-70-of-global-workers\">Climate change poses a growing threat to global health<\/a> that demands immediate attention. Vulnerable populations around the world bear a disproportionate burden of these health risks but receive insufficient support for mitigation and recovery.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p>A range of concerning climate change-related impacts has already had a visible effect on <a title=\"New publication\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/new-publication\">public<\/a> health. These issues could intensify without concerted action:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-19q4opq\">\n<ul class=\"wef-1hg4348\" role=\"list\">\n<li class=\"wef-r2smif\"><b>Extreme weather:\u00a0<\/b><a title=\"Extreme weather events abound, leaving no escape from climate change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/extreme-weather-events-abound-leaving-no-escape-from-climate-change\">Extreme weather events<\/a> affect around\u00a0189 million people\u00a0annually. <a title=\"Funding: Waste Management in Developing Countries\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funding-waste-management-in-developing-countries\">Developing countries<\/a> are home to 97% of people affected and 79% of deaths attributed to extreme weather since 1991.<\/li>\n<li class=\"wef-r2smif\"><b>Air quality:<\/b>\u00a0Air pollution causes 6.7 <a title=\"36-Million-Year Cycle Drives Biodiversity, Say Scientists\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/36-million-year-cycle-drives-biodiversity-say-scientists\">million premature deaths globally every year<\/a>. It disproportionately affects urban populations due to indoor air pollution \u2013 from the use of some fuels in homes, for example \u2013 which is a major contributor to overall air pollution. Research shows\u00a089% of premature deaths\u00a0related to air <a title=\"Countering biodiversity loss, plastic pollution a priority for Nordic countries\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/countering-biodiversity-loss-plastic-pollution-a-priority-for-nordic-countries\">pollution occur in low- and middle-income countries<\/a> (LMICs), particularly in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific region.<\/li>\n<li class=\"wef-r2smif\"><b>Food and <a title=\"Researcher \u2013 Integrated Water Modeling and Assessment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/researcher-integrated-water-modeling-and-assessment\">water<\/a> risks:<\/b>\u00a0Food insecurity affects\u00a02.3 billion people\u00a0around the world and in low-income countries\u00a060% of the population\u00a0is affected. Low-income communities are also overrepresented among the\u00a02 billion people\u00a0around the world that lack access to clean <a title=\"New publication: Factors influencing community\u2019s adoption of domestic water conservation measures\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/new-publication-factors-influencing-communitys-adoption-of-domestic-water-conservation-measures\">water<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"wef-r2smif\"><b>Infectious agents:<\/b>\u00a0Nearly\u00a014 million deaths\u00a0globally per year are infection-related, and\u00a0over half of all infectious diseases\u00a0are aggravated by <a title=\"Call for consultancy services: recruitment of experts to review and synthesise information on the nexus between climate change, forests and trees\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-consultancy-services-recruitment-of-experts-to-review-and-synthesise-information-on-the-nexus-between-climate-change-forests-and-trees\">climate change<\/a>. This is because rising air and <a title=\"From Western expansion to Climate Change: A brief history of water\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/from-western-expansion-to-climate-change-a-brief-history-of-water\">water temperatures and changes<\/a> in precipitation patterns and humidity levels alter the global distribution of pathogens and accelerate the spread of disease.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p>To tackle these challenges, we need to identify how the different manifestations of <a title=\"UN Urges States to Protect Children\u2019s Rights Amidst Climate Change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/un-urges-states-to-protect-childrens-rights-amidst-climate-change\">climate change<\/a> are affecting people\u2019s health directly and indirectly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p>That\u2019s why the\u00a0<a title=\"International Climate Initiative Small Grants\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/international-climate-initiative-small-grants\">Climate and Health initiative<\/a>\u00a0at the World Economic Forum and L.E.K. Consulting have collaborated to produce an insight report <a title=\"Call for expressions of interest: Regional hubs for climate change and health\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-expressions-of-interest-regional-hubs-for-climate-change-and-health\">called\u00a0Health Impacts of Climate Change<\/a>: Evidence Landscape and Role of Private Sector.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p>This\u00a0report\u00a0assesses the biggest health <a title=\"Climate change\u2019s impact on Earth\u2019s structure\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-changes-impact-on-earths-structure\">impacts of climate change<\/a>, looking at both direct and indirect drivers. It also explains the critical interventions required to address the areas where action is most urgently needed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h95ek0\">\n<p class=\"chakra-heading wef-1297bd5\"><b>How climate change affects health<br \/>\n<\/b>This comprehensive review of academic studies and reports identifies the 10 areas of health that are most severely affected by climate change and urgently require intervention:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p>The\u00a0report\u00a0shows that infants, children, the elderly, and pregnant women are particularly vulnerable in all of these areas. Weakened physiological functions can prevent people in these groups from <a title=\"Expert: Climate change adaptation is vital for forest restoration.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/expert-climate-change-adaptation-is-vital-for-forest-restoration\">adapting to environmental changes<\/a> like rising temperatures and make them less effective at combating infections. Women are also more vulnerable because their livelihoods are often more reliant on <a title=\"Assistant Research Fellow (Natural Resources Management)(Re-Advertised) \u2013 2 Post\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/assistant-research-fellow-natural-resources-managementre-advertised-2-post\">natural resources<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p>Socially disadvantaged populations, including lower-income individuals and racial minorities, face interconnected challenges \u2013 from higher rates of pre-existing medical conditions, to substandard living conditions and limited access to healthcare services. In <a title=\"United Nations Environment Programme: Waste Management in Developing Countries\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/united-nations-environment-programme-waste-management-in-developing-countries\">developed countries<\/a> too, rural populations are vulnerable due to limited access to healthcare services and to the internet \u2013 a vital source of information and connectivity.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wef-h95ek0\">\n<p class=\"chakra-heading wef-1297bd5\"><strong>Drivers of poor health<br \/>\n<\/strong>The complex, interconnected ways in which climate change can affect people&#8217;s health arise from a web of systemic drivers, including infrastructural damage, agricultural disruption, livelihood loss and healthcare access challenges.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p>The report\u2019s analysis has pinpointed 12 of these drivers, which can be categorized as primary contributors (the direct <a title=\"Restoring and Mitigating Climate Change Effects on Forest Biodiversity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/restoring-and-mitigating-climate-change-effects-on-forest-biodiversity\">effects of climate change<\/a>), secondary contributors (drivers arising from primary contributors) and amplifiers, which are pre-existing conditions that exacerbate the primary and secondary drivers or the resulting health effects.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p>Addressing these common, underlying drivers could mitigate the broad spectrum of climate-related health effects. The report identifies six key intervention themes that could be used to help <a title=\"Post-COP28 questions linger for climate-impacted communities\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/post-cop28-questions-linger-for-climate-impacted-communities\">communities and healthcare systems manage the effects of climate<\/a> change:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-1lwh2xf\">\n<div class=\"wef-8atqhb\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"chakra-image wef-gbfd2a\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.weforum.org\/editor\/tDCWJ-4k9liy1tS-oESAiJmNoNO3LwrmPE5MyGdUZ9g.jpg\" sizes=\"100vw\" alt=\"Infographic showing the primary and secondary drivers and amplifiers of climate change's impact on the health of people around the world.\" \/><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"wef-0\">How to address the main factors driving <a title=\"Adapting to a Warming World: Climate Change Predictions\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/adapting-to-a-warming-world-climate-change-predictions\">climate change&#8217;s impact on health around the world<\/a>.<\/span><span class=\"wef-0\">Image:\u00a0Health <a title=\"Climate Change\u2019s Impact on Eczema: A Study by the International Eczema Council\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-changes-impact-on-eczema-a-study-by-the-international-eczema-council\">Impacts of Climate Change<\/a>: Evidence Landscape and Role of Private Sector<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-1pqrgv9\">\n<div class=\"gtm-snippet wef-tvww5o\" data-gtm-section=\"What is the World Economic Forum doing to accelerate value-based health care?\">\n<div class=\"wef-hyvrvl\">\n<div class=\"wef-1hb97yd\">\n<div class=\"chakra-collapse\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n<div class=\"wef-0\">\n<div class=\"wef-1mm3vby\">\n<p><strong>Involving the private sector<br \/>\n<\/strong>The public sector plays a pivotal role in addressing the impact of climate change on health, but the private sector could also be a critical avenue for driving progress. Private climate finance has been\u00a0increasing at half the rate\u00a0of public finance in recent years, with most progress made in <a title=\"Funguo Innovation Programme 2nd Funding Round\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funguo-innovation-programme-2nd-funding-round\">funding<\/a> renewable energy and a notable shortfall in adaptation and resilience finance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p>But private companies in many industries also have a vested interest in <a title=\"IUCN Launches the Project \u201cEnhancing climate resilience of Biodiversity Hotspots in Jordan\u201d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/iucn-launches-the-project-enhancing-climate-resilience-of-biodiversity-hotspots-in-jordan\">enhancing climate resilience<\/a> and could contribute valuable resources, expertise, and innovative solutions. In particular, technology could play a crucial role in <a title=\"Climate change mitigation: reducing emissions\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-mitigation-reducing-emissions\">mitigating the health impacts of climate change<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p>Some\u00a0healthcare and pharmaceutical companies\u00a0are already exploring digital tools to expand healthcare access. In other industries, agritech companies have <a title=\"United Nations Industrial Development Organisation \u2014 Innovative Solutions towards Net-Zero\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/united-nations-industrial-development-organisation-innovative-solutions-towards-net-zero\">developed\u00a0innovative solutions<\/a>\u00a0to address climate challenges faced by farmers, while insurers have started to offer\u00a0weather insurance products\u00a0to manage climate-related risks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p>Additionally, the <a title=\"Energy Globe Award for Sustainability \u2014 Awards 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/uncategorized\/energy-globe-award-for-sustainability-awards-2023\">energy<\/a>, construction and transportation industries are deploying technologies to address issues like\u00a0wastewater management\u00a0and to expand\u00a0electricity and connectivity for health facilities. This includes <a title=\"Enhancement of local farmers\u2019 adaptive capacity to climate stresses, livelihoods and biodiversity conservation through introduction of proven mushroom cultivation and preservation technologies in villages adjacent to Kilombero nature reserve in Kilomber\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/research\/enhancement-of-local-farmers-adaptive-capacity-to-climate-stresses-livelihoods-and-biodiversity-conservation-through-introduction-of-proven-mushroom-cultivation-and-preservation-technologies-in-villag\">technology to enhance<\/a> infrastructure durability and reliability, monitor integrity, retrofit systems for severe weather and to diversify supply chains to reduce disruption risks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-16mda8u\">\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--podcast\">\n<div class=\"iframe-fallback__container wef-3kvm1r\">\n<div class=\"wef-0\">\n<p>But this is only the beginning. To <a title=\"Unlocking the potential of bamboo and rattan as nature-based solution to tackle plastic pollution\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/unlocking-the-potential-of-bamboo-and-rattan-as-nature-based-solution-to-tackle-plastic-pollution\">unlock the private sector&#8217;s full potential<\/a>, industries must collaborate, using their complementary skills and expertise to encourage the development, application and adoption of new technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Fostering collaboration between the <a title=\"Request for Proposal on Analysis of Public Sector Climate, Forest, and Land Use Strategies and Determination of Investment Readiness Score\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/request-for-proposal-on-analysis-of-public-sector-climate-forest-and-land-use-strategies-and-determination-of-investment-readiness-score\">public sector<\/a>, private companies, and non-profit organisations could also help to bridge gaps in capabilities and knowledge and promote inclusivity. This could maximise the impact of <a title=\"Climate Resilience Challenge Grants\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-resilience-challenge-grants\">climate resilience<\/a> initiatives targeting public health.<\/p>\n<p>The combined strength of these diverse stakeholders should be used to <a title=\"Enhancing Climate Challenge Mitigation Through Improved Monitoring in East Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/enhancing-climate-challenge-mitigation-through-improved-monitoring-in-east-africa\">enhance global resilience to climate change while also improving<\/a> the health of the world\u2019s vulnerable populations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The complex, interconnected impact of climate change on health is driven by systemic factors across infrastructure, agriculture, livelihoods and healthcare.
