{"id":9991,"date":"2024-07-06T21:24:12","date_gmt":"2024-07-06T18:24:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/?p=9991"},"modified":"2024-07-06T21:24:12","modified_gmt":"2024-07-06T18:24:12","slug":"financing-nature-positive-outcomes-with-biodiversity-credits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/financing-nature-positive-outcomes-with-biodiversity-credits","title":{"rendered":"Financing nature-positive outcomes with biodiversity credits"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wef-1pf65v3\">\n<p>Biodiversity is important to our health, security and economies, but it\u2019s declining rapidly threatening the very foundations of our future.<\/p>\n<p>There is a need to raise financing for nature, and biodiversity credits are a crucial tool to channel investments for nature-positive outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>The International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits is bringing together stakeholders to drive the growth and scaling of such a market.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p>Nature underpins our lives, livelihoods, health and wellbeing. That means our economy too is embedded in nature, not external to it, as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/602e92b2e90e07660f807b47\/The_Economics_of_Biodiversity_The_Dasgupta_Review_Full_Report.pdf\">UK\u2019s Dasgupta Review<\/a>\u00a0so clearly spelled out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p>Yet <a title=\"The Impact of Natural History Museum Decline on Biodiversity Conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/the-impact-of-natural-history-museum-decline-on-biodiversity-conservation\">nature has declined to its poorest state in human history<\/a>. Its loss is now one of the greatest threats we face and a multiplier of other global threats, from <a title=\"Call for consultancy services: recruitment of experts to review and synthesise information on the nexus between climate change, forests and trees\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-consultancy-services-recruitment-of-experts-to-review-and-synthesise-information-on-the-nexus-between-climate-change-forests-and-trees\">climate change<\/a> to pandemics. This <a title=\"Mountain forests are being lost at an accelerating rate, putting biodiversity at risk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/mountain-forests-are-being-lost-at-an-accelerating-rate-putting-biodiversity-at-risk\">puts our collective futures at risk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p>There are positive signs that things are starting to change.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wef-h95ek0\">\n<p class=\"chakra-heading wef-1297bd5\"><strong>Biodiversity credits: Turning targets into investment in nature<br \/>\n<\/strong>The urgent need to align financial flows with nature positive outcomes has been cemented in the landmark\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/gbf\/\">Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF)<\/a>. We have new frameworks for valuing nature and embedding and responding to nature-related risks. The Taskforce for Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) published its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tnfd.global\/recommendations-of-the-tnfd\/\">framework last year<\/a>\u00a0enabling businesses to place nature onto their balance sheet, and the Science Based Targets Network released its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sciencebasedtargetsnetwork.org\/how-it-works\/the-first-science-based-targets-for-nature\/\">first set of corporate science-based targets for nature<\/a>, equipping companies to set targets to both reduce their negative impacts and increase positive ones for nature and people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p>All of this is driving the <a title=\"Business Handbook for Biodiversity Conservation and Business Biodiversity Conservation Cases\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/business-handbook-for-biodiversity-conservation-and-business-biodiversity-conservation-cases\">business case<\/a> for nature, but we need to move more quickly. There is still a gap in turning these targets and frameworks into investment in nature, and recognising nature-positive business actions \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.paulsoninstitute.org\/conservation\/financing-nature-report\/\">the nature finance gap remains at over $700 billion per year.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p>Six months after the GBF agreement, in June last year the UK and French governments launched the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iapbiocredits.org\/\">International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits (IAPB)<\/a>\u00a0at the Summit for a New Global Financing Pact in Paris, to drive the growth and scaling of high-integrity biodiversity credit markets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p>Although not the complete solution to <a title=\"Blended finance and climate colonialism\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/blended-finance-and-climate-colonialism\">financing<\/a> nature, biodiversity credits are a crucial tool that can enable financial decision makers to put nature-positive actions which benefit people and planet on their balance sheets, while providing the stewards of biodiversity access to much-needed finance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p>Unlike <a title=\"The story behind a Carbon Credit\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/the-story-behind-a-carbon-credit\">carbon<\/a>, which is the same everywhere, biodiversity is complex, and there are already many types of biodiversity credits in voluntary and compliance markets around the world. Yet we have much to learn from carbon markets, especially when it comes to creating the right incentives to safeguard nature-positive outcomes, working in partnership with the <a title=\"New publication\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/new-publication\">public<\/a> and private sectors, and Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h95ek0\">\n<p class=\"chakra-heading wef-1297bd5\"><strong>Actionable recommendations<br \/>\n<\/strong>Unlocking this opportunity requires surmounting several barriers where we want to reach actionable recommendations, applicable at national and international levels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p><b>1.\u00a0<\/b>Measurements of biodiversity need to be effective, robust and science-based, while securing broad consensus on what these are and allowing for heterogeneity reflecting the diversity of nature.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p><b>2.\u00a0<\/b>Buyers need to be confident that what they are buying is real and the claims they can make about them are credible, and that these support their business aims complementing corporate social responsibility and TNFD requirements.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p><b>3.\u00a0<\/b>Suppliers need to be able to ensure they can meet expectations of the market and safeguard integrity of their credits at an economical and fair price over the long term.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p><b>4.\u00a0<\/b>Nature\u2019s stewards, including land managers, farmers, Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, need to be involved in the design and development of these markets, have access to the biodiversity they preserve, and receive equitable rewards.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p><b>5.\u00a0<\/b>Governance of these markets needs to bring all this together to ensure improvements in biodiversity and its avoided destruction are real, and benefits are shared maintaining trust and integrity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p>While this is challenging, we are confident.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p>The <a title=\"Post-COP28 questions linger for climate-impacted communities\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/post-cop28-questions-linger-for-climate-impacted-communities\">community<\/a> is converging on the same issues, especially of equity and transparency. We are seeing very interesting developments around the world, from the emergence of new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/understanding-biodiversity-net-gain#:~:text=Biodiversity%20net%20gain%20(%20BNG%20)%20is,what%20was%20there%20before%20development.\">compliance<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/carbon-pulse.com\/242282\/\">voluntary markets<\/a>\u00a0to the forthcoming launch of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/initiatives.weforum.org\/financing-for-nature\/frontrunners-coalition\">Frontrunners coalition<\/a>\u00a0and biodiversity credit pilot auction.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p>We need to work with the World Economic Forum and other stakeholders active in this space and build on what has come before; that is why the IAPB sought engagement globally through its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartsurvey.co.uk\/s\/iapbiocredits-call-for-views\/\">Call for Views<\/a>. A next step for the IAPB will be to flesh out more clearly the types of possible credit, the claims that sellers and buyers can robustly make, what buyers need in order to invest at scale, the benefits credits create for nature and people, and the respective roles of the public and <a title=\"How the private sector can address climate change\u2019s impact on health\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/how-the-private-sector-can-address-climate-changes-impact-on-health\">private sector<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wef-h792s0\">\n<p>The <a title=\"World faces \u2018food wars\u2019 due to geopolitics and climate change, Warns Olam\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/world-faces-food-wars-due-to-geopolitics-and-climate-change-warns-olam\">world faces<\/a> a moment of urgency. Getting started and building momentum is much more important than waiting for a perfect answer. What is important is to <a title=\"Field practical training on entomology \u2013 hands-on learning experience with insects\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/field-practical-training-on-entomology-hands-on-learning-experience-with-insects\">learn from existing best practice<\/a>, test, pilot and sandbox different approaches and principles, and iterate over time.
