The partnership was\u00a0<a class=\"underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/japanese-startup-wooden-satellites\">first announced back in 2020<\/a>, and in March of last year, the team coupled up with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to send three types of wood to the International Space Station (ISS) to test each type&#8217;s off-world resilience.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Wood&#8217;s ability to withstand simulated low earth orbit \u2014 or LEO \u2014 conditions astounded us,&#8221; Koji Murata, the leader of the effort and a Kyoto University researcher,\u00a0<a class=\"underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kyoto-u.ac.jp\/en\/research-news\/2021-08-31\">said at the time<\/a>. &#8220;We now want to see if we can accurately estimate the effects of the harsh LEO environment on organic materials.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Once they made it to the ISS, the samples were placed in JAXA&#8217;s Kibo module, where they stayed for roughly ten months. And as of last week, the results are finally in \u2014 and apparently, it was a grand success.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, according to a\u00a0<a class=\"underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2023-05-space-magnolia-wooden-artificial-satellite.html\">press release<\/a>, the scientists are hoping to launch their first full-blown wooden satellite into orbit next year.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"font-k text-4 font-black  lg:border-b border-gray-900 pb-1\">Magnolia, Sweet Thing<\/h2>\n<p>As far as the winning type of wood goes, magnolia was found to be the most resilient, with the scientists confirming\u00a0there to be &#8220;no decomposition or deformations, such as cracking, warping, peeling, or surface damage &#8221; and almost no change in weight in the returned sample, according to the release.<\/p>\n<div id=\"6WVPtztd\" class=\"ad-slot-wrapper ad__w300 ad__h250 ad__align\" data-builder-child=\"Vy2cFUfE\">\n<div id=\"incontent3\" class=\"ad__slot ad__h250-inner\" role=\"region\" aria-label=\"Advertisement\" data-google-query-id=\"CLj3rZ7nhv8CFTPE5godE0AJxA\">\n<p>That&#8217;s a pretty remarkable feat, considering the harsh temperatures and high levels of radiation characteristic of the final frontier.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"font-k text-4 font-black  lg:border-b border-gray-900 pb-1\">Trees, Please<\/h2>\n<p>From military applications to high-speed internet, society very much relies on satellites. But for how much we rely on them, satellites pose a lot of real concerns, both to Earth&#8217;s internal and external environments.<\/p>\n<p>Like most other spacecraft, when satellites die, they often turn into very expensive trash. And when dying satellites fall back into Earth&#8217;s atmosphere, they burn aluminum \u2014 another serious issue, considering that high levels of burning aluminum could ultimately\u00a0<a class=\"underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/starlink-satellite-reentry-ozone-depletion-atmosphere\">rip a new hole in our atmosphere ozone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All to say, transitioning to wooden satellites could be a best-of-both-worlds solution to the growing satellite issue.
