But the real buzz is how they rent them out.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<hr class=\"embed-base rule-embed color-accent border-solid weight-light\" \/>\n<div class=\"article_paragraph_2\"><\/div>\n<p><abbr class=\"drop-cap color-accent font-accent\">T<\/abbr>housands of honey bees leave a cluster of wooden boxes and rush towards a vast grove of almond trees bursting with white flowers. It\u2019s sweet-smelling springtime in California\u2019s Central Valley, and the bees are about to cross-pollinate one of the country\u2019s top cash crops.<\/p>\n<div class=\"halfway_hardwall_1\"><\/div>\n<p>The bee colony, and the orchard, are owned by America\u2019s richest farmers, billionaires Stewart and Lynda Resnick. They run the privately held agriculture giant Wonderful Co., with $5 billion in annual sales from products such as Halos, Fiji Water, Pom Wonderful and\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/chloesorvino\/2023\/03\/23\/seedless-lemons-are-the-next-big-bet-from-the-billionaires-behind-halos-pom-wonderful-and-fiji-water\/?sh=3d02c55764b5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/chloesorvino\/2023\/03\/23\/seedless-lemons-are-the-next-big-bet-from-the-billionaires-behind-halos-pom-wonderful-and-fiji-water\/?sh=3d02c55764b5\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/chloesorvino\/2023\/03\/23\/seedless-lemons-are-the-next-big-bet-from-the-billionaires-behind-halos-pom-wonderful-and-fiji-water\/?sh=3d02c55764b5\" aria-label=\"seedless lemons\">seedless lemons<\/a>. Wonderful\u2019s roughly 80,000 hives, with about 4.5 billion bees, make it one of America\u2019s largest beekeepers. There are just five or so companies that control the majority of the colonies in the U.S., and their bees are responsible for pollinating roughly one-third of the food Americans eat every year, from apples and onions to strawberries and carrots. Beef producers need bees, too, as the colonies pollinate feed ingredients like alfalfa seed and soybeans. Demand is so high for bees \u2014 with the supply suffering from annual die-offs \u2014 that Wonderful leases its pollinators to farmers as far away as Maine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPollinators are imperative to the food supply,\u201d Rob Yraceburu, the head of Wonderful\u2019s beekeeping operation and the president of the company\u2019s orchard farming, tells\u00a0<em>Forbes<\/em>. \u201cThey\u2019re crucial to ensuring a supply of fruits and nuts that we all have come to depend on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Resnicks have built an agricultural empire. They know that crops without bees aren\u2019t happy. A wide array of food plants don\u2019t grow well without them. Nuts and fruits are smaller and fewer flowers sprout. Before they owned their own bees, the Resnicks brought in as many as 75 different bee companies every year just to pollinate their almond orchards. The logistical nightmare had to end, so in 2015, Wonderful acquired four small beekeeping companies and bred their own stocks from that foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Wonderful has managed to avoid the pitfalls that many of its competitors face. Last year, about 40% of the country\u2019s managed bees died, the highest annual loss in 11 years, according to the Bee Informed project at the University of Maryland. Wonderful, by contrast, says its bee population has been growing organically at an annual rate of 13% \u2014 the company hasn\u2019t bought any new ones in five years \u2014 and the number of hives pollinating last year increased to 60,000 from 45,000 in 2021.
