According to a recent study by the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, solar could account for as much as 40% of the nation\u2019s electricity supply by 2035 and 45% by 2050, pending aggressive cost reductions, supportive policies and large-scale electrification.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"viewer-1586u\" class=\"eSWI6 _1j-51 _1FoOD _3M0Fe T3Ond1 WkT0MK public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">How Does it Work? <\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"eSWI6 _1j-51 _1FoOD _3M0Fe T3Ond1 WkT0MK public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong>Traditional solar thermophotovoltaics (STPV) rely on an intermediate layer to tailor sunlight for better efficiency. The <span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">front side of the intermediate layer (the side facing the sun) is designed to absorb all photons coming from the sun.
