{"id":3611,"date":"2023-06-08T09:03:50","date_gmt":"2023-06-08T06:03:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/foresteconomics\/?p=3611"},"modified":"2023-06-08T09:14:09","modified_gmt":"2023-06-08T06:14:09","slug":"tanzania-varsity-students-build-satellite-to-boost-climate-change-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/foresteconomics\/tanzania-varsity-students-build-satellite-to-boost-climate-change-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Tanzania Varsity students build satellite to boost climate change study"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"article-content_summary\">\n<h2 class=\"title-small\"><\/h2>\n<div class=\"text-block\">\n<p><b>The 3U CubeSat Satellite is expected to be launched 400 kilometers into the air to collect data for research on numerous topics such as climate change and wildlife movement which will increase efficiency and performance in climate change mitigation.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<div class=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>\u00a0Students at St. Joseph University of Tanzania (SJUIT) are working on an ambitious project to build a satellite in order to increase data collecting for study on topics such as climate change and wildlife movement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-page-ad_wrap desktop\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thecitizen.co.tz\/resource\/image\/4261266\/landscape_ratio2x1\/960\/480\/4aabb69b9ce4ce436cdd9d90fb6fbe27\/gn\/varsity-pic.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>The $250,000 project was created by three second-year students seeking Bachelor\u2019s degrees in Computer Science and Engineering. this pose a need to create a conducive environment for creativity and innovations to foster a change in education system toward a more practical approach.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>\u201cSo far, actual development of the satellite has reached 50 percent, and we anticipate that it will be sent into space by the end of this year or early next year (2024) to offer information on a variety of topics,<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>The 3U Cubesat Satellite will be launched 400 kilometres into the air to collect data for research on numerous topics such as climate change and wildlife movement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>According to Prof Opiyo, the actual design of the satellite began two years ago, and they are currently creating a prototype of the satellite and testing it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>\u201cUpon being launched, it will help us collect various information to boost the work of institutions and researchers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>\u00a0The SJUIT, in partnership with its Department of Innovation and Techno-Preneurship Acceleration Facility (ITAF), is financing the project through the purchase of equipment, but negotiations are still being conducted to involve researchers and other interested parties.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>The talks are for the purpose of engaging researchers from foreign colleges and research institutions so they can help with their expertise and more technical training. They can also help us in the actual service of putting the satellite into space,\u201d said Prof Opiyo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>Having reached 50 percent of its design, the satellite can now collect information, according to one of the students involved in the project, Mr. Steven Makunga.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>\u00a0He said that the instrument would help in obtaining weather information and communication in areas that have not yet been reached.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>By collecting weather information, the equipment will thus be helpful in providing agricultural information to farmers about the crops to be planted and the development of their crops in general.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>\u201cIt can also be helpful in the education sector through the dissemination of content in rural areas where there is no internet infrastructure or telephone services. It can also facilitate communication in the health sector,\u201d said Mr Makunga.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>He said it can also be of help when major disasters like fire and floods occur by providing emergency information to people going to evacuation sites.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<section class=\"teasers-row\">\n<div class=\"grid-container\">\n<div class=\"col-1-1
