Sign up for the Climate Coach newsletter, in your inbox every Tuesday and Thursday.<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-dbVHzF wpds-c-dbVHzF-hDkAcj-variant-default\" role=\"separator\" data-orientation=\"horizontal\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">The new figures offer more evidence that global climate efforts \u2014 including transitioning from fossil fuels to cleaner energy \u2014 are falling short of what scientists say is needed to stem the warming of the planet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\u201cEvery year, we see the impacts of climate change in the heat waves, droughts, flooding, wildfires and storms happening all around us,\u201d said NOAA Administrator Rick Spinrad in a statement. \u201cWhile we will have to adapt to the climate impacts we cannot avoid, we must expend every effort to slash carbon pollution and safeguard this planet and the life that calls it home.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">Carbon dioxide levels in May averaged 424.0 parts per million (ppm) \u2014 the fourth-largest annual increase since measurements began 65 years ago at the NOAA observatory in Mauna Loa, Hawaii.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">The highest monthly mean levels of CO2 peaks occur in May for the Northern Hemisphere \u2014 just after plants ooze the gas before growing season. May\u2019s monthly average this year sat at 423.78 ppm, a 3.0 ppm increase over May 2022\u2019s average.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">The rises in carbon dioxide levels do not astonish climate scientists who have tracked them over time.<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\u201c[The findings are] disappointing, but not surprising. We\u2019re still seeing CO2 rise at the same pace as it has for the last few decades,\u201d Ralph Keeling, a geochemist at Scripps, told The Post.<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">Carbon dioxide \u2014 which is generated by burning fossil fuels for transportation and electrical generation, by cement manufacturing, deforestation, agriculture and many other practices \u2014 traps heat from the planet\u2019s surface that would otherwise escape into space. Carbon dioxide pollution, a key greenhouse gas, amplifies extreme weather events, such as heat waves, drought and wildfires, as well as precipitation and flooding.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">Between January and April of this year, 12,972 wildfires have scorched more than 392,287 acres of land according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/access\/monitoring\/monthly-report\/fire\/202304\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NOAA.<\/a>\u00a0Atmospheric rivers, combined with snowmelt, battered the western United States with significant flooding that left hundreds of thousands of people without power.<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<div class=\"cb dn db-ns\" data-qa=\"article-body-ad\">\n<div class=\"hide-for-print relative flex justify-center content-box items-center b bh mb-md mt-none pt-lg pb-lg\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n<div class=\"center absolute w-100 border-box\">\n<div class=\"dib gray-dark pl-xs pr-xs font-sans-serif light font-xxxxs lh-md\">Last year was declared the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2023\/01\/10\/fifth-warmest-year-record-climate\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_2&amp;itid=lk_inline_manual_19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0fifth- or sixth-warmest year on record<\/a>\u00a0by five different scientific organizations. Twenty-eight countries set national record-high annual averages last year, including Britain, Spain, France, Germany, China and New Zealand. Berkeley Earth\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/berkeleyearth.org\/press-release-2022-was-fifth-warmest-year-since-1850\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>\u00a0that 850 million people experienced their warmest year ever.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">\u201cWhatever we\u2019re seeing weather-wise now is just the beginnings of much bigger changes,\u201d Keeling said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">Scientists can track carbon dioxide in two ways. One is through direct measures of CO2 levels in the atmosphere \u2014 as Scripps scientists have been doing at the Mauna Loa observatory. The other method is by estimating emissions from multiple sources \u2014 work conducted by the International Energy Agency.<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">In a March report, the IEA stated that global emissions of carbon dioxide related to energy production\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2023\/03\/02\/emissions-hit-carbon-dioxide\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grew by 0.9 percent in 2022<\/a>, reaching a new high of more than 36.8 billion metric tons.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">As levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide continue to surge, leaders around the world face mounting pressure to commit to more aggressive plans to reduce greenhouse gas pollution. Last year\u2019s climate summit in Egypt \u2014 known as COP27 \u2014 was widely viewed as a disappointment on this score, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2022\/11\/20\/cop27-climate-conference-deal-fund\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with little progress achieved<\/a>\u00a0on binding measures to reduce emissions.<\/div>\n<div data-qa=\"article-body\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">Scientists worry that the new El Ni\u00f1o cycle could increase the rate of CO2 growth in the atmosphere. El Ni\u00f1o, the opposite of La Ni\u00f1a, triggers warmer-than-normal surface waters in the tropical Pacific Ocean and is marked by drought in some regions.<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">During El Ni\u00f1o, drying tropical vegetation and savannas contribute to higher C02 levels, Keeling said. The previous La Ni\u00f1a cycle has contributed to slightly slower growth rates.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">\u201cI expect the news next year to look even worse,\u201d Keeling said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-jjHkyS hide-for-print\">\n<div class=\"wpds-c-dgPYWO wpds-c-dgPYWO-iPJLV-css\" data-qa=\"content\">\n<h3 class=\"wpds-c-jtAZFm\" data-qa=\"linkbox-headline\">More on climate change<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wpds-c-eynqHn\"><b>Understanding our climate:\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/2019\/national\/climate-environment\/thermometers-climate-change\/?itid=lb_more-on-climate-change_1&amp;itid=lb_more-on-climate-change_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global warming is a real phenomenon<\/a>, and weather disasters are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-solutions\/2020\/10\/22\/climate-curious-disasters-climate-change\/?itid=lb_more-on-climate-change_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">undeniably linked to it<\/a>.
