Australian households waste\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/statistics\/environment\/environmental-management\/waste-account-australia-experimental-estimates\/latest-release\">3.1 million tons of food each year<\/a>. That&#8217;s more than five kilograms each household per week.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/statistics\/environment\/environmental-management\/waste-account-australia-experimental-estimates\/latest-release\">Over half<\/a>\u00a0of all household waste is food organics and garden organics, also known as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleanup.org.au\/fogo\">FOGO<\/a>&#8220;. These scraps and clippings take up space in landfill and, when they rot, emit dangerous greenhouse gases.<\/p>\n<p>The federal government&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dcceew.gov.au\/environment\/protection\/waste\/publications\/national-waste-policy-action-plan\">National Waste Policy Action Plan<\/a>\u00a0aims to increase the\u00a0<a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/organic+waste\/\" rel=\"tag\">organic waste<\/a>\u00a0recycling rate from 47% to 80% by 2030 and halve the amount sent to landfill. This won&#8217;t happen on its own\u2014we need investment and action.<\/p>\n<p>Food and garden waste can be captured and turned into compost. Composting is no longer just the domain of the home gardener or eco-warrior. It&#8217;s happening\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dcceew.gov.au\/environment\/protection\/waste\/food-waste\/recovering-organic-waste\">at commercial scale<\/a>, through services such as council collection from homes.<\/p>\n<p>A federal government\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dcceew.gov.au\/environment\/protection\/waste\/food-waste\/food-waste-for-healthy-soils-fund\">fund<\/a>\u00a0is building\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/minister.dcceew.gov.au\/plibersek\/media-releases\/reusing-western-australias-food-waste-improved-farming\">new composting facilities<\/a>\u00a0and supporting other food and garden organics recycling projects. The South Australian government has invested in council trials of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenindustries.sa.gov.au\/reforming-household-waste\">weekly green bin collection<\/a>\u00a0and fortnightly rubbish collection.<\/p>\n<p>But more must be done. Recycling\u00a0<a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/food+waste\/\" rel=\"tag\">food waste<\/a>\u00a0into high-quality compost is a win-win solution, for people and the planet. Here, we explain why.<\/p>\n<h2>Compost is a winner for the climate<\/h2>\n<p>When food rots in landfill, in the absence of oxygen, the process releases a potent greenhouse gas called methane.<\/p>\n<p>Composting is different because the microbes can breathe. In the presence of oxygen, they transform waste into valuable organic matter without producing methane. They recycle\u00a0<a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/organic+carbon\/\" rel=\"tag\">organic carbon<\/a>\u00a0and nutrients into compost, which can be used to improve\u00a0<a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/soil+health\/\" rel=\"tag\">soil health<\/a>\u00a0and productivity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most food and garden waste in Australia comes from homes.
