That\u2019s the conclusion of a recently published\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41467-023-38073-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">study<\/a>\u00a0that sought to calculate the carbon benefits of preserving forests and other landscapes.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil\u2019s Amazon has the highest rate of carbon stock of protected areas, according to the study, accounting for as much as 36% of the total. \u201cThese forests are the most threatened by human pressure, so protected areas are particularly important here,\u201d Laura Duncanson, an assistant professor of geographical sciences at the University of Maryland and lead author of the new paper published June 1 in\u00a0<em>Nature Communications,\u00a0<\/em>told Mongabay in an email.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists from the University of Maryland, Northern Arizona University, the University of Arizona, and Conservation International worked with never-before-used satellite data, gathered by NASA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthdata.nasa.gov\/sensors\/gedi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation<\/a>\u00a0(GEDI). They found protected areas stock an additional 9.65 billion metric tons of carbon in their aboveground biomass, compared to ecologically similar unprotected areas. Avoided deforestation and degradation are the main reasons behind this additional carbon stock, the authors say. Image by IMF\/Raphael Alves via\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/imfphoto\/51142831291\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Flickr<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc-nd\/2.0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">CC BY-NC-ND 2.0<\/a>).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For Patrick Roehrdanz, study co-author and manager of spatial planning for area conservation in response to climate change at Conservation International, the findings highlight that protected areas are \u201cdoing the job they are supposed to be doing\u201d in terms of carbon, biodiversity and ecosystem structure.<\/p>\n<p>In the context of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2022\/12\/nations-adopt-kunming-montreal-global-biodiversity-framework\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Global Biodiversity Framework<\/a>\u00a0ambitions to expand protected areas across the globe, \u201cwe can expect that additional protected areas will result in additional carbon mitigation coming along with it,\u201d he told Mongabay by video call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis study supports continued protection and expansion of protected areas as one approach to climate action,\u201d Duncanson told Mongabay in an email. \u201cOf course, this is still a relatively small piece of the picture \u2014 forest conservation alone will never solve the crisis without drastic cuts in fossil fuel emissions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Viola Heinrich, a postdoctoral researcher with the University of Exeter, U.K., and the German Research Centre for Geosciences, who was not involved in the study, the results aren\u2019t surprising but are welcome as they offer new data to inform policymakers. \u201cIt actually provides the quantitative evidence for policymakers to potentially expand protected areas where it\u2019s possible, or where it\u2019s feasible.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_269330\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-269330\" src=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/06\/02135812\/Monte-Pascoal-National-Park-in-Brazil.jpg\" alt=\"Monte Pascoal National Park in Brazil. \" width=\"1536\" height=\"1024\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Monte Pascoal National Park in Brazil.
