Terpenoids are present in all plants, and are responsible for plant coloring and aroma. They also give plants a unique taste when they\u2019re eaten.<\/p>\n<p>While the odors they emit and the tastes they create can be attractive to humans or pollinating insects, the chemicals in the terpenoids are often repellent or toxic to insects, fungi, bacterial parasites, and animals that would consume or infect the plants that produce them. With support from other MSU researchers and graduate students, the scientists were able to track the evolution of mint plant genomes over an incredibly long period of time (60\u201470 million years).<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-add-12\" class=\"content_add_block\">\n<div id=\"block-block-83\" class=\"block block-block\">\n<div class=\"block-inner\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div id=\"70710f01-b0d6-467f-8914-e99b38002a69\" data-aaad=\"true\" data-aa-adunit=\"\/339474670\/Ancient_Origins.net\/Ancient_Origins2_Native\" data-status=\"rendered\" data-aa-device=\"[&quot;desktop&quot;,&quot;tablet&quot;,&quot;mobile&quot;]\" data-aa-sizes=\"[[300,250],[336,280]]\" data-aa-lazy-loaded=\"false\" data-aa-refresh-viewable=\"30\" data-aa-additional-non-h-b-sizes=\"[&quot;fluid&quot;]\" data-google-query-id=\"CIfXxYv73f8CFc7J3godvwABsg\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/339474670,423516288\/Ancient_Origins.net\/Ancient_Origins2_Native_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Over millions of years, plants have adapted and evolved for their particular niches where they thrive, and that means that these chemistries are diverse and have clearly adjusted to their environment,&#8221; Hamberger said. &#8220;So, we try to identify and discover pathways to these specialized metabolites that plants make.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Two graduate students, Abigail Bryson and Emily Lanier, were able to identify the genes in mint plants that were responsible for the biosynthesis (creation) of terpenoids. While studying the genome of a type of mint known as a beautyberry, the two researchers found it contained a large gene cluster known as the BGC group. This distinctive set of genes has been observed in bacteria many times, but its role in the plant world is not well understood.<\/p>\n<p>Looking more closely, Bryson and Lanier found different versions of the BGC group in six other species of mint, all of which had a special place in the genome.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We are learning that the physical location of genes within the genome is important,&#8221; Bryson said. &#8220;It can drive evolution of specialized metabolic pathways in the plant, leading to a vast diversity of interesting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/history-ancient-traditions\/modern-science-confirms-ancient-chinese-remedy-provides-effective-non-021495\">natural plant compounds\u00a0<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-add-17\" class=\"content_add_block\">\n<div id=\"block-block-84\" class=\"block block-block\">\n<div class=\"block-inner\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div id=\"66b2a0eb-9d6e-44dc-a7eb-dec87ec7fee6\" data-aaad=\"true\" data-aa-adunit=\"\/339474670\/Ancient_Origins.net\/Ancient_Origins3_Native\" data-status=\"rendered\" data-aa-device=\"[&quot;desktop&quot;,&quot;tablet&quot;,&quot;mobile&quot;]\" data-aa-sizes=\"[[300,250],[336,280]]\" data-aa-lazy-loaded=\"false\" data-aa-refresh-viewable=\"30\" data-aa-additional-non-h-b-sizes=\"[&quot;fluid&quot;]\" data-google-query-id=\"CJnmuY373f8CFcpt0wodAL4J9Q\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/339474670,423516288\/Ancient_Origins.net\/Ancient_Origins3_Native_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Through further study, the researchers discovered that the BGC cluster in the beautyberry plant is involved in the creation of two different kinds of terpenoids. They found dense accumulations of these terpenoids in various parts of the plant, including the leaves and roots, which are vulnerable to attack by pests and predators.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s the same base molecule, but each species is making its own version and modifying it in different ways to fit their survival needs,&#8221; Lanier said, referring to the terpenoids.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>With the ability to adapt to living in all types of ecosystems, mint plants can diversify into a broad range of species, many of which will look, smell, and taste quite different from their cousins.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-image cboxElement\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/sites\/default\/files\/beautyberry.jpg\" alt=\"The aptly-named beautyberry is a member of the mint family, which recently was the source of an insight on the metabolic pathways of the mint family. To give a couple of examples, Indian Coleus is often applied as a treatment for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/history-ancient-traditions\/versatile-plant-what-were-many-uses-cannabis-ancient-egypt-007733\">glaucoma<\/a>, while Texas sage has antimicrobial properties that have made it useful as a remedy for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/news-science-space\/ancient-chinese-remedy-could-wipe-out-tuberculosis-007275\">tuberculosis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But modern researchers didn\u2019t just suddenly discover the health-protecting capacities of mint.<\/p>\n<p>The plant was referenced 3,500 years ago in an ancient Egyptian medical text known as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/artifacts-ancient-writings\/ebers-papyrus-0012333\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ebers Papyrus\u00a0<\/a>, which prescribed it as a cure for bloating and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/history-famous-people\/roland-farter-0017774\">flatulence<\/a>. More than a thousand years later, physicians in Greece, including the famous\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/history-famous-people\/galen-famous-medical-researcher-classical-antiquity-005459\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Galen<\/a>, were recommending mint plants as a safe and effective form of oral\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/history-ancient-traditions\/ancient-methods-contraception-even-tutankhamun-wore-protection-009205\">contraception<\/a>\u00a0for women. Mint has been used in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/myths-legends-americas\/unearthing-unexpected-fossil-usage-ancient-medicine-part-2-dragon-pills-gods-021481\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">traditional Chinese medicine\u00a0<\/a>for more than 2,000 years, and in fact, a 2019 research project successfully sequenced the DNA of a type of medicinal mint known as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/news-history-archaeology\/medicinal-mint-0011806\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chinese Skullcap\u00a0<\/a>, which researchers believe could allow the plant\u2019s chemicals to be used to develop many new therapeutic applications.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-image cboxElement\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/sites\/default\/files\/Chinese_14.jpg\" alt=\"Chinese skullcap, pictured, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years.
