This figure is below the historic April average of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/deforestation-brazils-amazon-falls-68-april-first-major-drop-under-lula-2023-05-12\/\">176 square miles, according to a Reuters report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, deforestation in the Amazon normally peaks during the summer due to it being the dry season \u2013 so researchers are unsure as to whether the downward trend will continue as the year passes by.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe numbers are at a very high level, and the dry season, which is favourable to deforestation, has not yet started\u201d,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.org.br\/nossosconteudos\/notas_e_releases\/english\/?85601\/Even-with-signs-of-a-drop-in-2023-deforestation-remains-high-in-the-Amazon-situation-is-critical-in-the-Cerrado\">explained Mariana Napolitano of WWF-Brazil in a statement.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Fighting against forest destruction<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_159019\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-159019\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-159019\" src=\"https:\/\/www.openaccessgovernment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/iStock-115951591-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Amazon deforestation from above\" width=\"1345\" height=\"2000\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-159019\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image \u00a9 luoman | iStock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Reports have shown that in Brazil\u2019s dry Cerrado region, land clearing is trending up.<\/p>\n<p>Officials have recorded a spike in deforestation in the Brazilian savanna this year.<\/p>\n<p>The loss comes \u201cin a context of continuous and increasing destruction that has been happening for a long time,\u201d said Edegar de Oliveira of WWF-Brazil. \u201cThis devastation has already consumed half of the biome.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This devastation has already consumed half of the biome<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Lula has said it is urgent for Brazil to show the world that his government is not only talking about protecting the environment but that it is on its way to fulfil a commitment to end deforestation by 2030.<\/p>\n<h3>The Cerrado and continued worries for our environment<\/h3>\n<p>According to the WWF, in the Cerrado, the situation is more alarming than most.<\/p>\n<p>According to the DETER system from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Institute_for_Space_Research\">INPE<\/a> (National Institute for Space Research), in the first four months of 2023, 2,133 km2 were devastated.
