The Prime Minister\u2019s Office through the Department of Disaster Management (DMD) has officially launched a National Digital Platform for Disaster Management. The launching event was held on 30th<\/sup>\u00a0June 2023 in Dodoma and graced by the Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister\u2019s Office (Policy, Parliament, and Coordination), Dr Jim Yonaz. The platform was developed as part of the project entitled\u00a0\u201cStrengthening Capacity for Tanzania National One Health Early Detection of and Response to Infectious Disease\u00a0 Epidemics (OneHealthDetect-TZ)\u201d<\/i>\u00a0implemented collaboratively by Prime Ministers\u2019 Office and\u00a0\u00a0Sokoine University of Agriculture<\/span><\/a>\u00a0through\u00a0SACIDS Foundation for One Health<\/span><\/a>. The project was funded by the \u00a0Ending Pandemic<\/span><\/a>. Other key implementing partners include the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI) and the President\u2019s Office-Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“We have learned that in order to\u00a0<\/i><\/span>manage<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/i>disasters<\/i>, we have to strengthen early warning systems and coordination\u00a0<\/span><\/i>including<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/i>timely detection of early\u00a0<\/span><\/i>signals<\/i>\u00a0of disasters<\/span>“<\/span>\u00a0Dr Yonaz said.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the event, the Permanent Secretary, Dr Jim Yonaz\u00a0said that Tanzania has gone through the history of facing disasters\u00a0<\/span>related to\u00a0environment\u00a0and outbreaks of human and\u00a0<\/span>infectious diseases, suggesting\u00a0a need to have\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0well-coordinated national plan to enable identifying indicators and share information\u00a0<\/span>timely\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>reduce risk and impact associated with<\/span>\u00a0potential disasters.<\/span>\u00a0He also noted that monitoring of events that may affect human<\/span>-,<\/span>\u00a0animal<\/span>–<\/span>\u00a0and environment<\/span>al health<\/span>\u00a0should be done effectively based on the concept of\u00a0One Health<\/i>\u00a0by implementing the National Strategic Plan for\u00a0One Health 2022 – 2023<\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0Dr Yonaz<\/span>\u00a0appealed to the H<\/span>igher Learning and research institutions\u00a0to continue\u00a0<\/span>investing in science and technology to address societal problems.<\/p>\n

\"imageThe launching event was also attended by\u00a0<\/span>the Vice-Chancellor\u00a0<\/span>of Sokoine\u00a0University of Agriculture (SUA)<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0Professor Raphael Chibunda<\/span>\u00a0who highlighted on the conception of this novel idea way back in December 2019 and thanked Ending Pandemics for the financial support to make the idea real<\/span>. Professor Chibunda said \u201cIt is\u00a0through this project\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0various activities have been implemented, to ensure that<\/span>\u00a0the Emergency Operation and Communication Center\u00a0becomes operational. The project, through the implementing\u00a0entities, has\u00a0provided<\/span>\u00a0technical support and various\u00a0I<\/span>nformation and Communication\u00a0T<\/span>echnology (ICT)\u00a0equipment\u00a0<\/span>with a value of\u00a0Tanzanian<\/span>\u00a0Shillings\u00a042.3 million<\/span>\u201d<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The I<\/span>CT Officer from the Prime Minister’s Office<\/span>,\u00a0Policy, Parliament and Coordination, Mr. Alex Ndimbo\u00a0<\/span>described the architecture of the digital platform and functionalities\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>to enhance\u00a0community\u00a0<\/span>participation in the detection and reporting of signals of potential disasters\u00a0to the relevant authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n

This\u00a0<\/span>platform serves as a\u00a0forum\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0bring together experts who manage the sectors related to animals, humans and the environment.\u00a0<\/span>It provides opportunity for any person including community members to share\u00a0information\u00a0<\/span>related to disasters\u00a0through\u00a0<\/span>a dedicated toll-free\u00a0number\u00a0190<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b>granted\u00a0<\/b><\/span>by<\/span>\u00a0the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA)<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
