{"id":4160,"date":"2023-10-12T09:01:36","date_gmt":"2023-10-12T06:01:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/foresteconomics\/?p=4160"},"modified":"2023-10-12T09:01:36","modified_gmt":"2023-10-12T06:01:36","slug":"more-positive-visions-for-conservation-need-communication","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/foresteconomics\/more-positive-visions-for-conservation-need-communication\/","title":{"rendered":"More positive visions for conservation need communication"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/by\/rachael-garrett\/\" rel=\"tag\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Rachael Garrett<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As our global thermostat keeps ticking up, species continue to vanish from the face of the planet, and as more and more lives are ruined by natural disasters, it\u2019s clear that we are failing horribly to address the world\u2019s most pressing sustainability challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Despite our news pages being filled with floods and fires, despite large-scale youth mobilizations getting increasingly desperate for action, and despite pages and pages of rigorous science telling us we need to be doing better, we have barely moved the needle on global greenhouse gas emissions or biodiversity loss.<\/p>\n<p>Every year, thousands of potentially influential representatives of business, government, and civil society meet to discuss solutions to these climate and sustainability challenges, but still little changes. Last month was not much different, with thousands gathering in the context of the UN General Assembly meeting and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.climateweeknyc.org\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Climate Week<\/a>\u00a0in New York.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_259551\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-259551\" src=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2022\/08\/24213154\/UN0364362-768x512.jpeg\" alt=\"\u201cThe way out of the climate and ecological crisis is collective. Photo \u00a9 UNICEF\/UN0364362.\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy of UNICEF\/UN0364362.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Once again, conversations focused on marginal improvements in carbon emissions targets, for example from Brazil, which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/brazil-revise-climate-targets-cut-emissions-53-by-2030-source-2023-09-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">announced<\/a>\u00a0plans to increase its targeted emissions reduction to 53% reduction from 2005 by 2025. Worse, some countries like the UK even\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2023\/09\/20\/whats-the-strategy-carmakers-ask-sunak-as-uk-pm-plans-to-backtrack-on-2030-climate-goals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">backtracked<\/a>\u00a0on their climate ambitions. More broadly, major businesses were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/09\/22\/business\/food-companies-emissions-climate-pledges.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">condemned<\/a>\u00a0for continuing to fall short on their climate pledges.<\/p>\n<p>After 20 years of working as an environmental scholar, I have become increasingly concerned that our ongoing failures stem at least partially from really bad messaging.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/juststopoil.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Just stop oil<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/forests\/solutions-to-deforestation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">End forest destruction<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sentientmedia.org\/in-uk-takeaway-the-meat-ad-sparks-controversy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Don\u2019t eat meat<\/a>. These pleas play well with people who already care about environmental issues, but they turn many people off and are deeply\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2022-10-oil-radical-protests-evidence.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">unpopular<\/a>. We put people on the defensive while failing to make any meaningful difference.\u00a0 These messages also position environmentalists directly against the powerful actors that drove our sustainability crises, thereby generating significant\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/oct\/29\/just-stop-oil-protests-roadblocks-activists-direct-action-climate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">backlash<\/a>\u00a0and misinformation, without directing action towards any specific alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>We are so focused on being against things that we keep missing an opportunity to be for something in our fight for a sustainable future.\u00a0\u00a0We desperately need new climate-friendly visions for our economies and governance systems that we can all get behind, not just a laundry list of what not to do. We need visions that cut through polarized visions of right and wrong, and focus on how we collectively could all be better off with new opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of offering up specific, large-scale plans to transform our economies to address climate and biodiversity challenges at events like this one, we cling to piecemeal, flawed silver bullets. We then throw them away because they don\u2019t work perfectly in the imperfect world we have created. We need only look at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ig.ft.com\/one-trillion-trees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">tree planting fiasco<\/a>\u00a0of the last few years for evidence of that.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of two years, tree planting was first framed as a breakthrough\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2019\/jul\/04\/planting-billions-trees-best-tackle-climate-crisis-scientists-canopy-emissions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">solution<\/a>\u00a0to climate change, carried forward by a frenzied media, and then quickly rejected as evidence came forward that these schemes typically\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/jan\/30\/most-of-11m-trees-planted-in-turkish-project-may-be-dead\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">fail<\/a>, do very\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/14\/climate\/tree-planting-reforestation-climate.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">little<\/a>\u00a0to tackle\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/list\/climate-change\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">climate change<\/a>, and often\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/bioscience\/article\/73\/2\/134\/6865284\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">exacerbate<\/a>\u00a0other social and ecological challenges. This debate recaptured the attention of influential leaders after Bill Gates described tree planting as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/09\/22\/bill-gates-climate-change-planting-trees-complete-nonsense-oil-gas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">complete nonsense<\/a>\u201d as a climate solution in late September. Now, the cycle of hope and destruction continues with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/aug\/24\/carbon-credit-speculators-could-lose-billions-as-offsets-deemed-worthless-aoe#:~:text=A%20new%20study%20in%20the,worse%20if%20used%20for%20offsetting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">carbon offsets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>See related:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2021\/07\/podcast-reforestation-done-right-from-haiti-to-honduras-and-ho-chi-minh-city\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Reforestation done right, from Haiti to Honduras and Ho Chi Minh City<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_270587\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-270587\" src=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/07\/05143727\/planting-trees-768x512.jpg\" alt=\"A pine seedling being planted\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A pine seedling planted in California. When people made the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/equitablegrowth.org\/a-plan-for-equitable-climate-policy-in-the-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">links<\/a>\u00a0between renewables and high-quality job creation on a backdrop of fossil fuel driven inflation, it sparked a vision for the U.S. economy that many people could get behind. Taking America\u2019s Inflation Reduction Act as a key example of this, we can see its massive success. Green energy continues to get cheaper and cheaper in the U.S. and green jobs continue to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/27\/business\/energy-environment\/oil-gas-renewable-energy-jobs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">grow<\/a>.\u00a0The policy is now\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataforprogress.org\/blog\/2023\/8\/16\/a-year-after-the-passage-of-the-inflation-reduction-act-key-climate-provisions-of-the-law-enjoy-strong-support-across-the-electorate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">supported<\/a>\u00a0across political parties.<\/p>\n<p>In the area of forest conservation, we now have decades of science detailing how and why deforestation control efforts have largely failed. Mostly they aren\u2019t enforced, don\u2019t cover enough area, or don\u2019t provide sufficient incentives for people to stop clearing forests in the face of significant counter pressure.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why I strongly support the development of more transformative visions for conservation.\u00a0One such vision is the\u00a0idea of developing \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theamazonwewant.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/PB-Bioeconomy-en_approved.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">socio-bioeconomies<\/a>\u201d to replace existing economic models. As the name implies, these efforts seek to build on the unique social, cultural and biological diversity of tropical forests as the basis of economic development, rather than clearing forests for mines, timber, and low-diversity agriculture. This idea is included in Brazil\u2019s newest deforestation prevention\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/infoamazonia.org\/en\/2023\/04\/14\/ppcdam-new-plan-against-deforestation-includes-technologies-to-anticipate-devastation-and-investment-in-bioeconomy-to-develop-the-amazon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">plan<\/a>\u00a0by President Lula,\u00a0but more tropical countries need to sign onto this idea, and it needs international support.<\/p>\n<p>A key element of socio-bioeconomies \u2013 like broader calls for \u201cdoughnut economics\u201d \u2013 is that they take justice and diversity as their guiding values, rather than profit and efficiency. Image courtesy of the Confederation of Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon Basin.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theamazonwewant.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/PB-Bioeconomy-en_approved.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Calls<\/a>\u00a0for socio-bioeconomies include:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>i) plans for more integrated forest\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/brazil-amazon-rainforest-sustainable-development-bioeconomy-412a0138de1b8356073a8cfa315d3ec0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">economies<\/a>\u00a0that take advantage of co-benefits for the environment, education, and health,<\/p>\n<p>ii) new supply chains and infrastructure to connect producers of forest-friendly products to growing urban populations in tropical forest nations, and<\/p>\n<p>iii)\u00a0new manufacturing opportunities to\u00a0bring benefits to local communities.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some key examples of this include fair contracts between cosmetic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturabrasil.fr\/en-us\/our-values\/our-partnership-with-communities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">companies<\/a>\u00a0and Indigenous communities to source plant ingredients, government food purchasing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2071-1050\/11\/5\/1425\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">programs<\/a>\u00a0that source sustainable products from traditional communities for school lunches, and the creation of rubber processing facilities to purchase latex from rubber tappers and employ community members to produce\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iadb.org\/sostenibilidad\/en\/what-do-condoms-safeguards-and-sustainable-development-have-in-common-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">condoms<\/a>\u00a0or leather-free\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/project.veja-store.com\/en\/single\/rubber\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">shoes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What both green energy and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/?s=bioeconomy\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">socio-bioeconomy efforts<\/a>\u00a0have in common is their ability to move past misguided debates about trading off jobs and development with the environment. That\u2019s a lie we were sold. Destroying our environment mostly benefits the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20211025-climate-how-to-make-the-rich-pay-for-their-carbon-emissions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">rich<\/a>\u00a0consumers of the world. And the world\u2019s poorest are always the ones who suffer.<\/p>\n<p>After years of digesting these lies, I was very heartened during my own\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/supporting-bioeconomies-of-a-healthy-standing-forest-and-flowing-rivers-tickets-705317873747?aff=oddtdtcreator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">participation<\/a>\u00a0in Climate Week to finally see some major changes in the narratives and interests of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/feature\/2019\/05\/22\/why-the-amazons-biodiversity-is-critical-for-the-globe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">World Bank<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iadb.org\/en\/news\/idb-and-banco-do-brasil-launch-program-promote-biodiversity-and-climate-action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Inter-American Development Bank<\/a>\u00a0towards socio-bioeconomy programs.
