It\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irena.org\/-\/media\/Files\/IRENA\/Agency\/Publication\/2022\/Jan\/IRENA_Market_Africa_2022_Summary.pdf\">the largest<\/a>\u00a0source of renewable energy on the continent and accounts for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-confidential.com\/resources\/1\/uploads\/content\/15%20energy%20future%20COL.png\">nearly one quarter<\/a>\u00a0of total electricity generation in sub-Saharan Africa. Some countries, however, have a much heavier reliance on it than others. For instance, hydropower accounts for at least\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/climate-impacts-on-african-hydropower\">80%<\/a>\u00a0of electricity generation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, Uganda and Zambia.<\/p>\n<p>The continent has a lot more hydropower potential too. With relatively abundant water resources, sub-Saharan Africa\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41560-017-0006-y\">is estimated<\/a>\u00a0to have 1.4 petawatt hours a year of untapped, low cost potential. To put this into perspective, 1 PWh of energy could power about half a billion households for one year, assuming each household consumes an average of about 5.5 kWh per day.<\/p>\n<p>However, there are political and environmental concerns that planners must consider if they want to expand hydropower. The tensions between\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/ethiopias-dam-dispute-five-key-reads-about-how-it-started-and-how-it-could-end-187644\">Ethiopia and downstream countries<\/a> in the Nile River basin, following the construction of the colossal Grand Renaissance Dam, are emblematic of this.<\/p>\n<p>As a researcher who studies the linkages between energy systems and climate change, I\u2019ve written a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0959652619317998\">paper<\/a>\u00a0that highlights why using or increasing dependency on hydropower involves climate-related risks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The questions to put in mind<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Tanzania has undergone a serious power shut down in recent years and more effort are now on Mwalimu Nyerere Dam construction, what are the actions in place to ensure its sustainability in the future?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arabcont.com\/Images\/news\/94E4031C-DE44-4D8E-8755-F5D0E5A6F7D5.jpeg\" alt=\"The Minister of Housing inspects the work progress of Julius Nyerere Dam and Hydropower Plant in Tanzania| The Arab Contractors\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hydropower provides clean electricity to millions in Africa.
