But Al Jaber didn\u2019t show up and he didn\u2019t make any major statements that day. Instead, U.S.\u00a0<a title=\"Funding for Climate or Clean Energy Projects\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funding-for-climate-or-clean-energy-projects-3\">climate<\/a>\u00a0envoy John Kerry gave the closing speech to those at the event.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Al Jaber\u2019s absence seemed to reflect the priorities of the recently concluded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/foresteconomics\/innovative-approach-to-enhance-seaweed-production-along-the-coastline-cop-28-united-arabs-emirates\/\">COP28<\/a>, where debate was focused mainly on the elephant in the room:\u00a0<a title=\"Record Trillion in Fossil Fuel Subsidies\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/record-7-trillion-in-fossil-fuel-subsidies\">fossil fuels<\/a>. COP30 in 2025 in Bel\u00e9m, Brazil, the gateway to the Amazon Rainforest, is expected to see far more substantive discussion on the part played by nature, which absorbs about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gml.noaa.gov\/ccgg\/carbontracker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">half<\/a>\u00a0of humanity\u2019s carbon emissions. Overall, the outcomes for nature and\u00a0<a title=\"Science without Borders Challenge 2024\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/science-without-borders-challenge-2024\">forests<\/a>\u00a0were a \u201cmixed bag\u201d at Dubai, observers said.<\/p>\n<p>On the plus side, the summit\u2019s final \u201cglobal stocktake\u201d text mentioned for the first time the goal from the declaration of COP26 in Glasgow in 2021 of \u201chalting and reversing\u00a0<a title=\"Invasive moths, beetles putting local forests at risk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/invasive-moths-beetles-putting-local-forests-at-risk\">deforestation and forest<\/a>\u00a0degradation by 2030,\u201d which was an unexpected win for forest advocates. Countries also made several major pledges to combat\u00a0<a title=\"How forest loss has changed biodiversity across the globe over the last 150 years\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/how-forest-loss-has-changed-biodiversity-across-the-globe-over-the-last-150-years\">forest loss<\/a>. There was also progress toward establishing a United Nations mechanism to facilitate nonmarket investment in keeping\u00a0<a title=\"Is tree planting truly effective in combating climate change?\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/is-tree-planting-truly-effective-in-combating-climate-change\">trees<\/a>\u00a0standing. But the world still isn\u2019t on track to meet any of these goals, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/foresteconomics\/health-and-humanitarian-goals-beyond-climate-focused-funds-goals-at-cop-28-2023-dubai\/\">COP28<\/a> text didn\u2019t mention most of the targets set at the\u00a0<a title=\"Applications Open for African Youth Summit on Biodiversity 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/applications-open-for-african-youth-summit-on-biodiversity-2023\">biodiversity summit<\/a>\u00a0in Montreal last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDifferent COP presidents want to be known for action on different topics.
