\n<\/strong>We offer fully funded, full-time PhD position in space-borne remote sensing, macroecology and biodiversity science. The candidate will join international team of Dr.\u00a0Petr Keil<\/strong>\u00a0(https:\/\/petrkeil.github.io<\/a>) at the Dpt. of Spatial Sciences at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences (https:\/\/www.fzp.czu.cz\/en<\/a>), Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague, Czech Republic.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The research is part of ERC-funded project BEAST (\u201cBiodiversity dynamics across a continuum of space, time, and their scales\u201d) which studies how biodiversity has changed in time at local, regional, and continental scales, during the last 50 years. The focus is on terrestrial\u00a0ecosystems<\/a>, and facets of biodiversity which can be remotely sensed from satellites. The specific role of the candidate will be to study temporal\u00a0change of remotely sensed<\/a>\u00a0spectral diversity, i.e., the diversity of spectra captured by space-borne satellite sensors such as MODIS or SENTINEL. This will be done at multiple spatial scales, and this scaling is an important part of the research. The practical goal is to link spectral diversity with field-measured taxonomic diversity (and to test the so-called \u201cspectral variability hypothesis\u201d) and to investigate if the remotely sensed\u00a0biodiversity change<\/a>\u00a0can be used as a proxy for temporal change of taxonomic diversity.<\/p>\n

Training and work will involve processing of geographic data, statistical analysis and\u00a0modelling<\/a>, dissemination of results via peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and establishing of a network of international collaborators. Candidates will\u00a0participate in workshops and training<\/a>, and will assist with teaching.<\/p>\n

\u200d<\/p>\n

We require<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00b7 Master\u2019s or equivalent degree\/diploma in a project-related field, e.g., ecology, geography, remote sensing, zoology,\u00a0botany<\/a>, bioinformatics, biostatistics, environmental sciences. I also encourage holders of degrees in mathematics, statistics, or physics to apply.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Prior experience with\u00a0spatial data<\/a>\u00a0and GIS, programming, and\/or statistical analysis in a command line is advantageous, motivation to learn new computational skills is essential.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Good spoken and written English.<\/p>\n

We offer<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0Income,\u00a0<\/strong>consisting of two parts:<\/p>\n

\u25e6 I. Standard employment contract with starting gross salary of\u00a032,000 CZK\/month<\/strong>, which is ca. 26,000 CZK\/month net after tax, but the latter varies depending on the family situation and other circumstances. This\u00a0funding<\/a>\u00a0is available until the end of 2027.<\/p>\n

\u25e6 II. Four entire years of tax-free PhD stipend of\u00a012,000 CZK\/month<\/strong>\u00a0during the first year. This will grow to 13,000, 14,000, and 16,000 CZK\/month in years 2, 3, and 4 respectively.<\/p>\n

Roughly, after combining these two parts, the starting\u00a0net<\/u>\u00a0income can be around 38,000 CZK\/month (ca. 1,500 EUR\/month as of 4th Jan 2024). The median salary in the Czech Republic in the first quarter of 2023 was 31,923 CZK\/month\u00a0gross<\/u>. For costs of accommodation see\u00a0https:\/\/www.sreality.cz\/en<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Full medical insurance and social security.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Funds for travel to conferences and workshops abroad. Funds for additional training.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 State-of-the-art scientific and computing equipment, software, access to journals and scientific databases, and comfortable office space. This also includes a laptop for the candidate.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Subsidized meals at the university canteen (Menza).<\/p>\n

\u00b7 International working environment (the working language is English), green campus in Suchdol in the outskirts of Prague, 30 min to Prague city center by public transport or bike, 15 min walk to several\u00a0natural protected<\/a>\u00a0areas. The campus has sports facilities, including a swimming pool, gym, athletic track, and indoor and outdoor playfields.<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0Starting date of the official\u00a0PhD program<\/a>\u00a0is 1st October 2024<\/strong>. However, earlier employment in our lab in 2024 can be negotiated.<\/p>\n
