Safeguarding these forests, which are essential ecologically, economically, and culturally, demands innovative approaches and deeper insights. To address these challenges, the University of Maine is launching new research initiatives this spring aimed at developing novel tools and knowledge essential for the preservation and sustainable management of these vital forest ecosystems.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>UMaine\u00a0<a title=\"Scientist: Forest Sciences or related fields\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/scientist-forest-sciences-or-related-fields\">scientists are embarking on six new projects aimed at monitoring and preserving the Northern Forest<\/a>\u00a0and its diverse species. These initiatives, supported by a $1.4 million\u00a0<a title=\"Research Grants for Field Research 2024\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/research-grants-for-field-research-2024\">grant from the Northern States Research<\/a>\u00a0Cooperative, will contribute invaluable insights into the region\u2019s ecosystem dynamics and facilitate the development of effective conservation strategies. Through collaborative efforts and\u00a0<a title=\"Calling for innovative ocean-minded startups\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/calling-for-innovative-ocean-minded-startups\">innovative<\/a>\u00a0research approaches, these projects are poised to enhance our understanding of the Northern Forest\u2019s ecological intricacies and support its long-term sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>The newly-funded\u00a0<a title=\"Call for Projects 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-projects-2023\">projects<\/a>, spearheaded by faculty from UMaine\u2019s College of Earth, Life and Health Sciences, include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Creating socially-informed\u00a0<a title=\"Forest Farm Producers in Nepal discussed to up-scale the best climate change adaptation practices\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/forest-farm-producers-in-nepal-discussed-to-up-scale-the-best-climate-change-adaptation-practices\">forest management practices for climate change adaptation<\/a>\u00a0and resilience. The project is led by Jeanette Allogio, faculty member with the Center for Research on Sustainable Forests and ecologist and\u00a0<a title=\"Spatial Data Scientist\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/spatial-data-scientist\">data<\/a>\u00a0manager for the Penobscot Experimental Forest.<\/li>\n<li>Developing a new eastern white pine health index using satellite\u00a0<a title=\"Training on Remote Sensing and GIS-based analysis for land cover change assessment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/training-on-remote-sensing-and-gis-based-analysis-for-land-cover-change-assessment\">remote sensing<\/a>. The project is guided by Pulakesh Das, postdoctoral\u00a0<a title=\"Research Associate in Ecology\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/research-associate-in-ecology\">research associate<\/a>\u00a0in the School of Forest Resources.<\/li>\n<li>Digitizing UMaine\u2019s Sewall Archive of more than 700,000 aerial photographs, and making it publicly accessible. The project, overseen by Dan\u00a0<a title=\"The Constitution of the Tanzania Forestry Students\u2019 Association (TFSA) of 2012\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/the-constitution-of-the-tanzania-forestry-students-association-tfsa-of-2012\">Hayes,\u00a0associate professor of geospatial analysis and remote sensing,\u00a0and conducted by graduate student<\/a>\u00a0Peter Howe, will allow people to explore landscape-scale changes in the Northern Forest.<\/li>\n<li>Investigating non-target impacts of hemlock wooly adelgid biocontrol agents to promote healthy conifers in the region. The project is led by Angela Mech, assistant professor of\u00a0<a title=\"Experiential Learning for Forest Entomology\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/experiential-learning-forest-entomology\">forest entomology<\/a>\u00a0in the School of Biology and Ecology.<\/li>\n<li>Quantifying the influence of site on\u00a0<a title=\"New publication: Predicting the distribution of critically endangered tree species Karomia gigas under climate change in Tanzania\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/new-publication-predicting-the-distribution-of-critically-endangered-tree-species-karomia-gigas-under-climate-change-in-tanzania\">species distribution<\/a>\u00a0at a spatial resolution compatible with management activities under future growing conditions. The project is directed by Michael Premer,\u00a0<a title=\"Assistant Forest Resources Manager\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/assistant-forest-resources-manager\">assistant professor of forest management with the School of Forest Resources<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Developing a framework to better understand the distribution of\u00a0<a title=\"The story behind a Carbon Credit\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/the-story-behind-a-carbon-credit\">carbon<\/a>\u00a0stocks and wildlife habitat connectivity across the Northern Forest. The project is led by Sydne Record, associate professor of landscape\u00a0<a title=\"Emergency Funding for Conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/emergency-funding-for-conservation\">conservation<\/a>\u00a0in the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Conservation Biology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The\u00a0<a title=\"Call for proposals to support Africa\u2019s Science Granting Councils in funding and managing research and innovation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-proposals-to-support-africas-science-granting-councils-in-funding-and-managing-research-and-innovation\">funding will also support research<\/a>\u00a0led by Jason Johnston, associate professor of wildlife ecology with the University of Maine at Presque Isle, to determine how effective environmental DNA (eDNA) can be at assessing the ability to detect forest pests and biodiversity in light of current and emerging threats.
