There, the Centre for International <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/foresteconomics\/phd-position-in-remote-sensing-and-biodiversity\/\">Forestry Research<\/a> and World <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/foresteconomics\/agroforestry-rises-as-a-smallholder-powered-climate-solution\/\">Agroforestry<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/foresteconomics\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=4814&amp;action=edit\">CIFOR-ICRAF<\/a>) and Big Life Foundation were holding a field visit as part of a two-day learning event on monitoring rangeland restoration \u2013 specifically on the assessment methods, data, and evidence base that is critical for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/foresteconomics\/robust-intersectoral-coordination-could-unleash-central-african-forests-contribution-to-sdgs\/\">long-term restoration impact<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Driving through the landscape, the participants observed swaths of bare soil \u2013 clear evidence of the ongoing drought in the area. \u201cThese soils are highly susceptible to erosion and degradation,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/foresteconomics\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=4792&amp;action=edit\">CIFOR-ICRAF<\/a> soil scientist Leigh Winowiecki, as she knelt to scoop some in her hands. \u201cWe need to protect this critical ecosystem.\u201d The group also saw livestock and wildlife droppings and caught a glimpse of a gerenuk (giraffe gazelle) \u2013 and the skull of a wildebeest! According to participant Petronilla Nduthu, a livestock expert at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kilimo.go.ke\/state-department-for-livestock\/\">Kenya\u2019s State Department of Livestock (MOA-SDL)<\/a>, more than 2.5 million livestock have died in Kenya in those three years.<\/p>\n<p>Consisting of participants from MOA-SDL, the<a href=\"https:\/\/maasaiwilderness.org\/\">\u00a0Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust (MWCT)<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/biglife.org\/\">Big Life Foundation<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/justdiggit.org\/\">\u00a0JUSTDIGGIT<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndma.go.ke\/index.php\/features\/about-ndma\">\u00a0National Drought Management Authority<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.org\/\">International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)<\/a>, and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndma.go.ke\/index.php\/features\/about-ndma\">\u00a0Kenya Water Towers Agency<\/a>, the workshop participants were all part of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/foresteconomics\/a-new-roadmap-charts-course-to-greener-trade\/\">\u00a0Green Climate<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenclimate.fund\/\"> Fund (GCF)<\/a>-funded project<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenclimate.fund\/project\/fp113\">\u00a0Towards Ending Drought Emergencies: Ecosystem Based Adaptation in Kenya\u2019s Arid and Semi-Arid Rangelands (TWENDE)<\/a>. TWENDE\u2019s mission is to positively impact 620,000 people in eleven counties and restore over 500,000 hectares of degraded rangelands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Government of Kenya, through the TWENDE project, has brought in experts from research, extension, and the private sector to develop solutions to build resilience to these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/foresteconomics\/questions-linger-for-climate-impacted-communities-post-cop28\/\">recurring droughts<\/a>,\u201d said Nduthu. The workshop aimed to build capacity on rangeland restoration assessment methods, raise awareness on the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/foresteconomics\/do-climate-pledges-rely-too-much-on-tree-planting\/\">monitoring restoration<\/a> and generating evidence on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/foresteconomics\/measuring-impact-to-improve-conservation-results\/\">impact of interventions<\/a>, and build capacity on data interpretation and use.
