{"id":4837,"date":"2024-02-26T20:28:43","date_gmt":"2024-02-26T17:28:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/foresteconomics\/?p=4837"},"modified":"2024-02-26T20:28:43","modified_gmt":"2024-02-26T17:28:43","slug":"world-leaders-at-cop28-urged-to-prioritize-soil-health-in-climate-plans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/foresteconomics\/world-leaders-at-cop28-urged-to-prioritize-soil-health-in-climate-plans\/","title":{"rendered":"World leaders at COP28 urged to prioritize soil health in climate plans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/world-soil-day\">\u00a0World Soil Day<\/a>, experts and civil society representatives at the UN Climate Summit urged world leaders to recognize the role of healthy soils in achieving the Paris Agreement, calling for these long overlooked ecosystems to feature in COP28 declarations and in plans for more sustainable food systems.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives from the scientific, finance, policy, corporate and grassroot sectors made the case for sustainable land management at an event organized on the sidelines of COP28 by the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cifor-icraf.org\/?utm_source=CIFOR+Blog&amp;utm_medium=topmenu&amp;utm_campaign=blogmenu\">\u00a0Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry<\/a>\u00a0(CIFOR-ICRAF), which co-leads the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coalitionforsoilhealth.org\/\">\u00a0Coalition of Action for Soil Health<\/a>\u00a0(CA4SH).<\/p>\n<p>The event came as soils are coming to the fore in climate discussions, as shown by the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cop28.com\/en\/news\/2023\/12\/COP28-UAE-Presidency-puts-food-systems-transformation\">\u00a0UAE Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems and Climate Action<\/a>\u00a0backed over 150 countries, and a<a href=\"https:\/\/climatechampions.unfccc.int\/system\/food-systems-call-to-action\/\">\u00a0call to action<\/a>\u00a0from more than 100 non-state actors. Both moves build on the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coalitionforsoilhealth.org\/news\/soil-health-resolution-high-level-plenary-at-unfccc-cop27-ca4sh-partners-gather-to-mobilise-soil-advocates-across-sectors\">\u00a0Soil Health Resolution CA4SH launched at COP27<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHealthy soils are the very foundation of our food systems and provide vital ecosystem services,\u201d said CIFOR-ICRAF CEO<a href=\"https:\/\/forestsnews.cifor.org\/85019\/to-fix-the-climate-think-of-food-soils-and-trees?fnl=en\">\u00a0\u00c9liane Ubalijoro<\/a>\u00a0before a packed room. \u201cThey sequester carbon, regulate water and nutrient cycling and host biodiversity.
