Dr. Alfred Chitiki

I am a Lecturer in the Department of Ecosystems & Conservation (Formerly Department of Forest Biology), College of Forestry, Wildlife and Tourism, Sokoine University of Agriculture, Morogoro in Tanzania. I have a PhD in Ecology. I have obtained B.Sc. (Forestry) degree from Sokoine University of Agriculture in 2001. In 2003 I joined Wageningen University in The Netherlands to pursue MSc. studies. In 2005 I was awarded MSc. Forest & Nature Conservation (specialisation: Forest Ecology and Management). I have obtained a PhD in Ecology from Sokoine University of Agriculture in 2014. My PhD work focused on Biodiversity Assessment, Climate Change, Landscape Ecology, and Ecological Modelling. The title of my PhD research was: Implications of Ecological Gradients and Climate Change on Tree Species Composition, Diversity and Distribution in Two Eastern Arc Mountains, Tanzania. My professional fields of interests include Biodiversity Assessment and Monitoring, Climate Change, Landscape Ecology, Ecological Modelling, Ecophysiology, Forest Management and Silviculture. In 2006, I joined Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) as an Assistant Lecturer. Since then, I have been actively involved in teaching, research and extension.

Postgraduate teaching include Terrestrial Ecosystems, Weather and Climate, Ecosystem Modelling, Assessment and Mapping of Ecosystem Service, Tree Physiology and Silviculture

I have received research funds from various organizations including The Mohamed Bin Zayed Funds (Modelling the distribution of critically endangered kipunji mokeys) and The Rufford Foundation (Population status of endangered puku antelope). Previous funding includes the Pangani River Basin Flow Assessment: A vegetation study funded by IUCN.

I am currently the supervisor of 3 Masters Students and 3 BSc students and have more than 15 Bachelors students who successfully graduated since 2006. Most of them got upper second class and some of them first class.
