{"id":1246,"date":"2021-03-11T18:38:50","date_gmt":"2021-03-11T15:38:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/reforest\/?p=1246"},"modified":"2025-12-08T23:34:19","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T20:34:19","slug":"orientation-of-resource-persons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/reforest\/orientation-of-resource-persons\/","title":{"rendered":"Orientation of Resource Persons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; text-align: justify;\">The REFOREST Programme organized a combined face-to face and zoom workshop from 20<\/span><sup style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; text-align: justify;\">th<\/sup><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; text-align: justify;\"> to 22<\/span><sup style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; text-align: justify;\">nd<\/sup><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; text-align: justify;\"> January 2021 to orientate resource persons involved in teaching the PhD courses during the first semester (January-June 2021).<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; text-align: justify;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; text-align: justify;\">The 25 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/reforest\/partners\/\">participants came from all the six partner<\/a> universities in the REFOREST Programme. The opening session was graced by university leaders at both SUA and SLU.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">The workshop objectives were to initiate contacts among lecturers teaching each subject so they could familiarize with the REFOREST programme, elaborate the course contents given in the PhD curriculum, agree on how to share the teaching load, understand and apply the rules and regulations for PhD studies at SUA (academic as well as administrative processes) and establish communication protocols among them. The participants were also familiarised with the operational terms and conditions (including compensation) for all academic staff involved in teaching and learning under the REFOREST programme. Further, the workshop helped to establish communication and rapport among these key implementers of the REFOREST programme. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">The diversity of expertise and experiences was an enriching aspect of the workshop. This was effectively applied in the elaboration of the course contents for each of the six courses planned for the first semester (January to June 2021). For each course, the resource persons involved were able to discuss subject matter contents, elaborate the delivery mechanisms (lectures, practicum, seminars\/tutorials, and assignments) and allocated time for each of these. They also elaborated the main sources of learning materials. There was a general agreement that new and up-to-date learning materials would be needed, thus access to advanced libraries for both students and resource persons was recommended. The REFOREST programme was advised to buy key textbooks as recommended by the teams working on each subject. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">Regarding the teaching and learning processes at PhD level the participants were reminded that the goal is to develop a cadre of scientists with competence for discovery and innovation.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Thus, the following approaches should be applied with <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">decreasing<\/b> emphasis: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin-left: .5in; text-align: justify; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 115%; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">i)<span style=\"font: 7.0pt 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">Inclusive approach<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"> \u2013 The educator develops a learning plan and the students apply it to reach the desired state of knowledge;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin-left: .5in; text-align: justify; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 115%; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">ii)<span style=\"font: 7.0pt 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">Pear reciprocal approach<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"> \u2013 students are organized in groups and enjoy mutual feedback at individual and at class level; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin-left: .5in; text-align: justify; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 115%; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">iii)<span style=\"font: 7.0pt 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">Practice approach<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"> \u2013 the educator assigns work that is carried out independently by the students; and<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin-left: .5in; text-align: justify; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 115%; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">iv)<span style=\"font: 7.0pt 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">Command approach<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"> &#8211; the educator as the main source of knowledge, lecturing to students. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">Overall, a heuristic approach to teaching and learning, and deepening of knowledge were emphasized. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">In this way, we will produce a mass of critical thinkers with capacity to <u>inven<\/u>t and <u>innovate<\/u>. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">Workshop participants recognized the students\u2019 diverse backgrounds and agreed on the need to tap into this during group discussions to facilitate learning from one another.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS',sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">The participants concluded that the workshop was effective and instrumental in enabling a good understanding of the REFOREST programme and enabling them to play their roles in implementing it.
