Wildlife Management Students Association of Sokoine University of Agriculture<\/a> (WISASUA) organized a three-day trip from December 1st to 3rd, 2023, at Mikumi National Park<\/a>. The primary objective of this excursion was to provide hands-on experience and orientation to fellow first year students in the field of wildlife management. During the trip, several key skills were imparted and experienced. These included:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Firstly, Wilderness Camping Practice<\/strong>– Students learned practical skills essential for camping in natural environments. These involve setting up campsites, cooking outdoors, understanding safety measures, and living sustainably within the wilderness.<\/p>\n

\"\"Secondly, Management and Conservation Aspects<\/strong>– The trip aimed to educate students about the complexities of managing and conserving Tanzania’s national parks <\/a>and other forms of protected areas. Students had an opportunity to discuss some management aspects such as policies, practices and challenges related to conservation efforts.<\/p>\n

Thirdly, Surviving Skills in the Wilderness<\/strong>– students learnt some survival techniques, such as navigation, finding food and water sources, basic first aid, and understanding wildlife behavior for safety.<\/p>\n

Fourthly, Game Driving <\/strong>– At last students engaged in guided game drives through the park to observe and appreciate the diverse wildlife and natural heritage that Mikumi National Park<\/a> offers. This activity provided an opportunity for students to witness animals in their natural habitats and understand their behaviors and ecosystems.<\/p>\n

Generally, the trip was not only a recreational visit but also an educational and practical experience designed to complement classroom learning. It aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application in the field of wildlife management, offering a holistic understanding of the complexities involved in preserving and managing natural environments and wildlife.<\/p>\n
