Exploring Uluguru Mountain Forest: A Learning Adventure for Erasmus Exchange Students at Sokoine University

Students from the University of Bonn, currently on Erasmus exchange program at Sokoine University of Agriculture, joined their hosts from the College of Forestry, Wildlife and Tourism for an enriching hiking and picnic excursion in the Uluguru Mountain Forest.

The trip offered more than just fresh air and scenic views. It served as an experiential learning opportunity for students enrolled in MSc. Forestry, MSc. Ecosystems Science and Management, MSc. Wildlife Management, MSc. Forest Resource Assessment and Management, MSc. Environmental and Natural Resource Economics, and MSc. Tourism Management, and  MSc. Forest Engineering.

Through the hike, students observed forest dynamics, biodiversity patterns, watershed functions, and the socio-ecological importance of the Uluguru Mountains one of Tanzania’s key Eastern Arc biodiversity hotspots. The picnic provided a relaxed space for cultural exchange, academic reflection, and strengthening collaboration between the two institutions.

This blend of outdoor recreation and field-based learning reflects the shared commitment of SUA and the University of Bonn to nurturing globally minded professionals equipped with practical skills, interdisciplinary understanding, and a deep appreciation for nature.
