Postdoc position – modelling and forest planning

Key Information

This Postdoc position has been established in co-operation with the Norwegian State Forest Agency, Statskog (www.statskog.no) and will involve research and further development around the GEOSKOG forest and forest management simulator.

The position is based in the city of Steinkjer in central Norway. The candidate will work with Statskog on an ongoing basis and must expect some office hours at their head office in Namsos.

The position runs for a period of 3 years with start date is as soon as possible.

Main responsibilities

The postdoc position will focus on the following main areas:

  • Evaluate, improve and develop various growth and yield and mortality functions that make up the GEOSKOG tool
  • Utilise GEOSKOG in a series of analyses looking at the effect of different forest management treatments,  environmental restrictions,  and harvesting strategies on the available volumes of timber as well as on the provision of ecosystems services in the short and medium term

Professional qualifications (required)

  • PhD in forestry with a focus on on growth & yield, planning, or modelling
  • Experience with writing and publishing scientific papers
  • Good written and oral English skills
  • Strong statistics skills and good working knowledge of the R statistical software package
  • Experience with programming

Will be evaluated positively

  • Knowledge on forestry in Northern-Europe or North-America
  • Knowledge on planning and simulation tools applied in forestry
  • Experience in developing forest growth models
  • The ability to write and speak a Scandinavian language

  • Good analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work constructively under pressure
  • Wish to work as part of an ambitious research team
  • Ability to cooperate with internal and external partners with different professional backgrounds and skill sets

Salary and benefits

The position is remunerated according to the Norwegian State Salary Scale as Postdoc code 1352, salary grade 59 – 67 (NOK 523.200 – 605.500 per year), commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, which includes a good occupational pension scheme, occupational injury and group life insurance, and low-interest home loans.
