The minimum requirements for admission of direct entrants into undergraduate degree programme are two principal passes in Biology/Zoology and Chemistry/Botany/ Physics/Geography (4.0 points of the current NECTA grading system) in the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE; A-level).
An equivalent candidate for undergraduate programmes shall be required to have a Diploma Certificate with a Distinction/Credit and a minimum of FOUR passes or THREE credits in relevant subjects in the certificate of Secondary School Education Examination (CSEE; O-level).
Candidates seeking admission through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) shall be required to have valid RPL certificate obtained after passing RPL examination relevant to the degree programme being applied for as recommended by senate. A transfer of credits from other recognized university may allow potential candidate to join BSc Forestry programme.
To be admitted to the BSc Forestry Degree Programme at Sokoine University of Agriculture, a candidate needs to meet minimum entry requirements stipulated in section 10. It is assumed that any candidate who has met the entry requirements (stipulated in section 10) will have acquired competencies and knowledge in science subjects and allied fields to undertake the BSc Forestry training. Where there is deficiency, SUA regulations will apply and a candidate may be required to undertake remedial courses before being allowed to register for the programme.
Regulations related to course and special project evaluation shall be as per General University Examination Regulations and Guidelines for Undergraduate and Non-Degree Programmes of Sokoine University of Agriculture where the candidate is expected to pass all courses and have a minimum of 60 credits (600 ‘NOTIONAL’ OR ‘AVERAGE LEARNING’ hours) per semester. To graduate with a degree of BSc. Forestry a student must have a minimum of 360 credits (3600 ‘NOTIONAL’ OR ‘AVERAGE LEARNING’ hours). The minimum time for full time students to complete their degree programme shall be six semesters while part-time students will be allowed to spend up to but not more than 12 semesters. Assessment criteria for various components of examinations shall be as per SUA general regulations and guidelines. Candidates who have completed year 2 or 3 but could not meet the requirement for a degree due to various reasons shall be given HIGHER DIPLOMA as an exit award.
Formative, summative and integrated learning assessments will be used to evaluate the knowledge and understanding of students in BSc Forestry programme. Formative assessments shall include assignments, quizzes, presentations, practicals, training and Research. Summative evaluation shall include tests and final examination. Written class examinations (class tests and end of semester examinations) are the principle method of assessment for knowledge and understanding in most courses in all years. Timed essays, laboratory and field practical reports and other course work assignments, delivered verbally, written or both, comprise 40% of the final course mark. The end of semester examinations carries 60%. At the end of the semester for each course an examination of 3 hours shall be given to students. Field practical training shall be an essential requirement of the BSc Forestry programme and shall be conducted during the 2, 4 and 6th semesters. Assessment of field practical shall be done on pass or fail bases. A pass in field practical shall be required before a candidate is allowed to proceed to the next semester or to graduate in case of a final year student.
