‍for the project “Regional Study Harz – Scenarios for Reforestation and its Socioeconomic Effects (REHA)” – sub-project 9 “Overall Societal Assessment of Ecosystem Services” in the working area Forest and Society.

‍The overall objective of the above-mentioned project is to develop a basis for decision-making for the development of the Harz Mountains in order to lead the region out of the crisis caused by the large-scale forest damage and into a sustainable future. The main aim of sub-project 9 is to determine the influence of forests on the quality and quantity of water supply by means of an econometric analysis of the relationship between water provision costs and land use as well as other explanatory variables. In addition, the influences of the planned reforestation on recreational, nature conservation and climate protection services are to be estimated using an existing regional benefit transfer model.

Tasks:

· Econometric analysis of the relationship between the costs of water provision and different forms of land use (e.g. deciduous/coniferous forest, conventional/ecological agriculture; sealed area, etc.) in the Harz Mountains (regression analysis)

· Extension of the analysis to all of Germany

· Adaptation of the Institute’s existing multiple benefit transfer model “ReWaLe” to the situation in the Harz Mountains and economic evaluation of the impacts of reforestation on recreational, nature conservation and climate protection services

· Presentation of results at work meetings and conferences

· Preparation of project reports and scientific publications

Professional profile:

· Completed university degree (Univ. diploma/M.Sc.) in general economics, applied economic disciplines, forest sciences or related fields; preferably with a relevant doctorate (not mandatory).

· Knowledge of and experience with quantitative-statistical assessment methods, including statistical modeling

· Sound knowledge and experience in geodata management and geostatistics, preferably using Access and ArcGIS

· Knowledge of forest economics is an advantage, but not mandatory

· Background knowledge on the scientific basis of the concept of ecosystem services

Personal profile:

· Team spirit, flexibility, ability to work under pressure and interest in scientific work

· Ability and willingness to work independently and cooperate in an interdisciplinary team

· Willingness to travel on business

‍In addition to the employment relationship, there is also the opportunity to do a doctorate at a German university. We offer you a diverse and interesting job in an international environment. You will work on challenging tasks in a dynamic research institute, characterized by lively interdisciplinary exchange. Your research results serve the public and support political decision-making processes.

‍We support the compatibility of work and family and are holders of the audit ‘berufundfamilie’ certificate. The Thünen Institute offers flexible working time models, home office and telework within the scope of the official possibilities. Part-time employment is possible in principle.

‍The employment is governed by the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD); the remuneration is paid if the tariff and personal requirements according to salary group 13 TVöD are fulfilled.

‍The Thünen Institute promotes professional equality among women and men and therefore welcomes applications from women in particular.
