FBA 608: Agroforestry and Ecological Restoration

Course Learning Outcome

On the completion of the course, students should have acquired the ability to:

            1.   Identify principal forces influencing ecological degradation of landscapes

2.   Determine the types, possible causes and extent of prevailing ecological

     damage/degradation;

3.   Identify most appropriate ecological restoration measures including agroforestry

   systems/technologies and entry points of the interventions; and

4.   Implement the interventions and monitor their impacts.

Course contents

Concepts of ecological degradation and restoration and their applications; Types, extent and cause(s) of the ecological damage/degradations; mitigation measures; conservation of biological diversity; principles and approaches to ecological restoration; regional land degradation problems and processes, holistic approach in ecological restoration; Agroforestry approach to ecological restoration; identification of appropriate agroforestry systems/technologies for intervention and entry point(s). Agroforestry systems/technologies management for ecological restoration. Appraisal of the impacts of the restoration process. Global, regional and national policies on ecological degradation and restoration.
